Canada is one of the world’s oldest and most peaceful modern democracies. In many respects, we have done well, especially when compared to countries experiencing ethnic and religious conflict, a backlash against refugees and other displaced persons, or the rise of nativist leaders who stoke intolerance and fear.

But the successes of recent generations are no guarantee of continued harmony. We are not immune from the challenges causing other societies to struggle. And we are only beginning to engage widely with Indigenous peoples to redefine our relationship – and explore what that means for citizenship in this country.

We could also do more to combat marginalization. Just ask disabled people who can’t use basic infrastructure; or transgendered Canadians confronting a staggering suicide rate; or Canadian-Arab youth who hide their identities when travelling; or advocates of Black Lives Matter. And what does growing inequality mean for how Canadians will experience citizenship in coming years?

This year’s Pierre Elliott Trudeau Foundation conference invites you to join us to experiment with ways to re-think and re-feel citizenship from people’s points of view. From hand-picked provocateurs’ rapid-fire pitches of the most important trends to watch for, to participatory theatre and thoughtful dialogue, this conference uses mixed methods to get at some of the toughest questions about how we experience belonging today.

And it invites us to consider whether the way we go about answering our questions might not matter as much as the questions themselves.
